Cleaning the air filter N Knock the filter out on the palm of your hand or blow it clear with compressed air from the inside outwards. In case of stubborn dirt or sticky filter fabric N Wash the filter in STIHL special cleaner (special accessory) or a clean, non-flammable solution (e.g. warm soapy water). Rinse the filter MS 261 C-Q English from the inside outwards under a jet of water – do not use a pressure washer. N Dry the filter components – do not expose to high temperatures. Installing the air filter 5902BA011 KN 2. 1. Engine Management Exhaust emissions are controlled by the design of the fundamental engine parameters and components (e.g. carburation, ignition, timing and valve or port timing) without the addition of any major hardware. Adjusting the Carburetor General Information The carburetor comes from the factory with a standard setting. This setting provides an optimum fuel-air mixture under most operating conditions. With this carburetor it is only possible to correct the adjusting screws within fine limits. If the setting is too lean there is a risk of engine damage due to N Place the filter in position. insufficient lubrication and N Press the air filter in the direction of overheating. the filter housing and turn it clockwise at the same time until it Standard Setting engages – the "STIHL" name must be horizontal. N Install the shroud – see "Shroud". L 5902BA012 KNLA H NStopping the engine NCheck the air filter and clean or replace if necessary. NCheck the spark arresting screen (country-specific) in the muffler and clean or replace if necessary. MS 261 C-Q N Turn the high speed screw (H) counterclockwise as far as stop (no more than 3/4 turn). N Turn the low speed screw (L) carefully clockwise as far as stop, then turn it back 1 full turn. Readjust idle Engine stops while idling N Open the low speed screw (L) one full turn. N Turn the idle speed screw (LA) clockwise until the chain begins to run – then back it off 1 full turn. Chain runs when engine is idling N Open the low speed screw (L) one full turn. N Turn the idle speed screw (LA) counterclockwise until the chain begins to run – then turn it another 1 turn in the same direction. If the chain continues moving when the engine is idling, have your saw checked and repaired by your servicing dealer. Erratic idling behavior, poor acceleration (even though low speed screw is open one turn) N Idle setting is too lean: Turn the low speed screw (L) counterclockwise until the engine runs and accelerates smoothly. It is usually necessary to change the setting of the idle speed screw (LA) after every correction to the low speed screw (L). Fine tuning for operation at high altitude A slight correction of the setting may be necessary if engine does not run satisfactorily: N Turn high speed screw (H) clockwise (leaner) – no further than stop. If the setting is too lean there is a risk of engine damage due to insufficient lubrication and overheating. English Spark Arresting Screen inMuffler In some countries the muffler is equipped with a spark arresting screen. N If the engine is down on power, check the spark arresting screen in the muffler. N Wait for the muffler to cool down. 0001BA009 KN2 1 N Take out the screw (1). N Pull out the spark arresting screen (2). N Clean the spark arresting screen. If the screen is damaged or heavily carbonized, fit a new one. N Refit the spark arresting screen. N Insert the screw and tighten it down. MS 261 C-Q English – Too much oil in fuel mix. Spark Plug – Dirty air filter. – Unfavorable running conditions, If engine is down on power, difficult to 5902BA014 KN 1 NInsert the combination wrench through the grommet (1) and turn it as necessary to engage the spark plug's hexagon. e.g. operating at part load. 1 start or runs poorly at idling speed, first check the spark plug. Fit a new spark plug after approx. 100 operating hours or earlier if the electrodes are badly eroded. Wrong fuel mix (too much engine oil in the gasoline), a dirty air filter and unfavorable running conditions (mostly at part throttle etc.) affect the condition of the spark plug. These factors cause N Push the combination fully home against the cylinder. deposits to form on the insulator nose which may result in trouble in operation. N Unscrew the spark plug. 2 Removing the spark plug Checking the Spark Plug N Remove the shroud – see "Shroud". N Move the Master Control lever to the stop position (0). 000BA071 KN 5902BA013 KN N Pull off the spark plug boot. Warning! To reduce the risk of fire and burn injury, use only spark plugs authorized by STIHL. Always press spark plug boot (1) snugly onto spark plug terminal (2) of 000BA039 KN A N Clean dirty spark plug. the proper size. (Note: If terminal has N Check electrode gap (A) and detachable SAE adapter nut, it must be readjust if necessary – see attached.)
