S-Video S-Video provides better picture quality than composite video. Composite video Composite video can be found on virtually all TVs, VCRs, and other video equipment. CR CB Y CR CB PR PB P/ / // R PB Y Y PB PR Y PR PB PR PB Y CR CB CR CB / / // PBY PR S VIDEO VIDEO Connecting the DPC-8.5 This chapter explains how to connect the DPC-8.5 to your other AV components. • Read the manuals supplied with your AV components. • Don’t connect the power cord until you’ve completed all audio and video connections. Optical Digital Output The DPC-8.5’s optical digital output socket has a dust cap for keeping out dust and dirt when it’s not in use. Remove the cap before inserting an optical plug, and push the plug in all the way to make a good connection. Keep the dust cap in a safe place for future use. RCA AV Connection Color Coding RCA-type AV connections are usually color coded: red, white, and yellow. Use red plugs to connect right-chan- nel audio inputs and outputs (typically labeled “R”). Use white plugs to connect left-channel audio inputs and out- puts (typically labeled “L”). And use yellow plugs to connect composite video inputs and outputs. • Push each plug in all the way to make a good connection (loose connections can cause noise or malfunctions). •To prevent interference, keep audio and video cables away from power cords and speaker cables. AV Cables & Connectors Video Component video Component video separates the luminance (Y) and color difference signals (PR, PB), providing the best picture quality. (Some TV manufacturers label their component video inputs slightly differently.) The DPC-8.5 has a BNC component video output and an RCA component video output. The TV handles the audio and video. If your TV has a Dolby Pro Logic decoder built-in, you’ll be able to enjoy DVDs and videos that bear the Dolby Surround logo. To enjoy Dolby Digital or DTS (5.1-channel surround), you’ll need a suitable decoder (see page 23). The DPC-8.5 has three types of video output: component video, S-Video, and composite video. Component video offers the best picture quality, so if your TV supports it, use a commercially available component video cable to connect one of the DPC-8.5’s COMPONENT VIDEO OUTPUTs to a component video input on your TV. If your TV supports progressive scanning, you must use component video in order to take advantage of that feature. See page 47 for more information on progressive scan- ning. S-Video offers better picture quality than composite video, so if your TV supports it, use the supplied S-Video cable to connect one of the DPC-8.5’s S VIDEO OUTPUTs to an S-Video input on your TV. Failing that, use the supplied composite video cable to connect one of the DPC-8.5’s VIDEO OUTPUTs to a composite video input on your TV. Audio Optical digital Optical digital audio connections can carry Dolby Digital or DTS multichannel digital audio (DVD-Video, DVD-Audio) or stereo digital audio (DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, SACD, VCD, CD, MP3). Coaxial digital Coaxial digital audio connections can carry Dolby Dig- ital or DTS multichannel digital audio (DVD-Video, DVD-Audio) or stereo digital audio (DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, SACD, VCD, CD, MP3). Analog RCA analog audio connectors can be found on virtu- ally all AV components. Multichannel analog audio cable (RCA) This cable carries multichannel analog audio and it’s typically used to connect DVD players with individual 5.1/7.1-channel analog audio outputs. Several standard analog audio cables can be used instead of a multichan- nel cable.
