To operate the system, first push button M-1 on side of switch housing, then pull the bail handle (switch lever) M-2 to the handlebar M-3. To turn the mower off, just release the bail handle. Once the bail handle has returned to the original position it will activate the "Automatic Braking Mechanism”. The motor is electrically braked and the mower blade will stop rotating in 3 seconds or less. VARIABLE SPEED SELF DRIVE SYSTEM - FIGURE N MODEL: SPCM1936 ONLY Your SPCM1936 mower is equipped with variable speed self drive. This system is independent from the blade On-Off switch. It can be used with or without the blade spinning. For example, when you have completed cutting your lawn, you can use the self drive to propel the mower back to your storage location without having the blade motor on. To operate the system without blade spinning: 1. Insert the safety key. 2. Push the self drive bail handle N-4 to the handlebar N-3. To turn the self drive off, release the self drive bail handle. The system has variable speed. You can select the speed by moving the selector lever N-5. As you move the selector lever forward, the speed will Increase. Moving the selector lever in a reverse direction, will decrease the speed. To operate with the blade spinning: 1. Insert the safety key. 2. Push button N-1 on side of switch housing, then pull the blade bail handle N-2 to the handlebar N-3. 3. Hold blade bail handle in place against handlebar with right hand. Now push the self drive bail handle N-4 to the handlebar N-3 with your left hand. 4. You can hold both bail bars simultaneously against the handlebar with your left hand. When you turn off the self drive, for example at the end of a row, it may become temporarily locked if you pull backwards on the mower. Simply push ahead slightly and then move the mower as required. During cutting, at times it may be easier to manoeuver around an object, such as a tree or plants, with the self drive off. The mower can easily be used with the self drive off. A WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY, NEVER ATTEMPT TO OVERRIDE THE OPERATION OF THE SWITCH OR SELF DRIVE SYSTEM. USE THE SELF DRIVE FOR ITS INTENDED PURPOSE ONLY MOWER OVERLOAD To prevent damage due to overload conditions, do not try to remove too much grass at one time. Slow down your cutting pace, or raise the cut height. If you have the SPCM1936 model, you can select a lower self-drive speed to slow the cutting pace. Your self drive has built-in overload circuit protection. If your mower self-drive shuts off, release bail handle, wait at least 10 seconds, and try again. If you are cutting tall grass, slow the self drive to the lowest speed position. meets cpsc safety requirements Black and Decker Mowers conform to the safety standards of the American National Standards Institute, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The blade turns when the blade motor is running. SAFETY SHIELD AND REAR DOOR - FIGURE O The safety shield O-1 is designed to minimize the throwing of stones or other objects by the mower blade backward from under the mower deck. The shield, along with the rear door O-2, minimizes the possibility of accidental foot contact with the blade. DO NOT operate mower without the safety shield and rear door in place. 10 DANGER: Sharp moving blade. Do not operate the mower if the rear door is not closed under spring tension as serious injury could result.Take your mower to the nearest service center for repair. FOR MODELS WITHOUT "ON-DEMAND" REMOVING MULCH INSERT - FIGURE O To remove the mulch insert O-3 so that you can bag or discharge the grass, follow the steps listed below: 1. 2. 3. 4. Release bail handle to turn mower off, wait until the blade stops and remove safety key. Raise the rear discharge door O-2 and hold it up. Locate your hand in the handle pocket O-4, lift and pull out the mulch insert O-3 completely. The rear discharge door is spring loaded. When you release it the door will return to the closed position. Ensure the door rests firmly against the deck. INSTALLING MULCH INSERT - FIGURE P 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for removing mulch insert. To insert mulch insert P-1, push it until contact is made with the outside of the deck. Then lift slightly so that mulch insert rib P-2 is within deck groove P-3. Release rear door P-4 and ensure it is properly closed. OPERATING THE MOWER FOR DISCHARGING To operate the mower in Rear Discharge mode: 1. Remove the grass catcher Q-2 or mulch insert O-3. 2.
