Inserttheoilfillercap/dipstickintotheoilfillerneckasfaras itwill go, butdo not screwit in,then removeitto checkthe oillevel. 4. Iftheoillevelisnearor belowthelowerlimitmarkonthedipstick, removetheoil fillercap/dipstick,andfillwiththerecommendedoil to the upperlimitmark.Do not overfill. 5. Reinstalltheoilfillercap/dipstick. Change Engine Oil Changeengineoil afterthefirstmonthor fivehoursofoperation,and everyfifty hoursoroncea seasonthereafter. Drainthe engineoilwhenthe engineiswarm.Warmoil drainsquickly andcompletely. 1. Turnthefuelvalve(Fig.11)totheOFFpositiontoreducethe possibilityof fuel leakage. 2. Placea suitablecontainernextto the engineto catchthe usedoil. 3. Removetheoilfillercap/dipstickanddraintheoil intothe containerby tippingthe enginetowardthe oil fillerneck. See Figure14. Usedoilisa hazardouswasteproduct.Disposeof usedoil properly. IDonot discardwithhouseholdwaste.Checkwithyourlocalauthori_ tiesor SearsServiceCenterfor safedisposal/recyclingfacilities. 4. Withtheengineinalevelposition,filltotheupperlimitmarkon thedipstickwiththe recommendedoil. NOTE:Runningtheenginewitha lowoil levelcancauseengine damage. 5. Reinstalltheoilfillercap/dipsticksecurely. Clean Engine • Dailyor beforeeveryuse,cleangrass,chaffor accumulated debrisfromengine.Keeplinkage,spring,andcontrolsclean. Keepareaaroundandbehindmufflerfreeof any combustible debris. • Keepingenginecleanallowsairmovementaroundengine. • Enginepartsshouldbekeptcleantoreducetheriskofoverheatingandignitionof accumulateddebris. Do not usewaterto cleanengineparts.Watercouldcontaminatefuel system.Usea brushor dry cloth. Disconnectsparkplugwire.Draingasolinefromlawnmoweror placea pieceofplasticunderthegascap. 2. Tip mowersothat it restson the housing,keepingthe mufflerside down.Holdmowerfirmly. Nevertip themowermorethan900inanydirectionanddonotleave the mowertippedforanylengthoftime.Oilcandrainintotheupper partof the enginecausinga startingproblem. 3. Scrapeandcleantheundersideofthedeckwithasuitabletool. Donot spraywithwater. IMPORTANT:Donot usea pressurewasheror gardenhoseto clean yourunit.Thesemaycausedamageto bearings,ortheengine.The useof waterwillresultin shortenedlifeandreduceserviceability. 4. Putthemowerbackonitswheelsontheground.Ifyouhadput plasticunderthe gas capearlier,makesureto removeit now. REPLACING REAR FLAP To replacerearflap,proceedas follows: 1. Liftreardoor,andpressflapinoneithersidetoremovefromhole. SeeFigure16. 2. Removeflapfromoppositeholeandreplacewithnewflapinthe oppositeorderandmannerof removal. Whenremovingthe cuttingbladefor sharpeningor replacement, protectyourhandswitha pairofheavyglovesoruseaheavyragto holdthe blade. BLADE CARE Periodicallyinspectthe bladeadapterfor cracks,especiallyif you strikea foreignobject. Replacewhennecessary.Followthe steps belowfor bladeservice. 1. Disconnectsparkplugbootfromsparkplug.Turnmoweron its sidemakingsurethattheair filterandthecarburetorarefacing up. 2. Removetheboltandthebladebellsupportwhichholdtheblade andthebladeadapterto theenginecrankshaft.SeeFigure17. 3. Removebladeandadapterfromthecrankshaft. NOTE:When removingtheseitems,the wavewashermayalso break freefromthecrankshaft.Be suretomakenoteoftheorientationofthis itemfor reassembly. 4. Removebladefromtheadapterfortestingbalance.Balancethe bladeon a roundshaftscrewdrivertocheck.Removemetalfrom the heavyside untilit balancesevenly.Whensharpeningthe blade,followthe originalangleof grind.Grindeachcuttingedge equallyto keepthe bladebalanced.
