Dangers
in
Using
the
;NOW
P
arameter
The
;NOW
parameter
p ermits
immediate
forward
or
bac
kw
ard
time
c
hanges.
Ho
w
ev
er,
sev
eral
dangerous
situations
can
o ccur:
An
y
applications
whic
h
rely
on
the
forward
progression
of
time
may
give
inconsisten
t
results
if
the
time
is
immediately
set
bac
kw
ards.
Suc
h
applications
include
the
pro cessing
of
timestamp
ed
transactions
in
whic
h
the
sequence
of
those
transactions
is
imp ortant.
In
order
to
reco
v
er
data
in
case
of
an
unexpected
hardw
are
or
softw
are
failure,
some
applications
require
that
the
system
time
m
ust
nev
er
seem
to
go
bac
kw
ards.
F
or
instance,
some
applications
log
transactions
to
a
circular
le.
These
transactions
are
timestamp
ed,
and
if
the
transactions
m
ust
b e
reco
v
ered,
the
reco
v
ery
program
determines
the
end
of
data
b
y
lo
oking
for
timestamps
whic
h
are
out
of
sequence.
If
the
system
time
is
set
bac
kw
ards
immediately
,
transactions
whic
h
o ccur
after
the
time
c
hange
may
not
b e
reco
v
ered.
Therefore,
do
not
set
the
time
bac
kw
ards
using
the
;NOW
option
if
there
are
applications
whic
h
log
their
transactions
using
timestamps.
Accoun
ting

data
may

distorted.
