FENDER ELECTRIC BASSES The purpose of this Jazz Bass and Precision Bass Instruction Manual is to acquaint you with the various features of the instruments, and their adjustments, and to give playing tips that may be useful to the player. Since their introductions, the Fender Precision Bass and Jazz Bass have become a part of the instrumentation of many of the world's leading musical organizations. Both bassmen and guitarists have found their technique improves very rapidly with these instruments and that they can play considerably more difficult work than ever before. Both instruments contain features that make playing even easier and tone more precise. With the Fender Basses, only light finger action is necessary for fretting and picking. Greater volume is attainable with little effort by use of the volume controls, and tonal variations may be achieved with the wide-range tone controls. Also appreciated by bassmen is the fact that with Fender Basses you are able to move around while playing; the over-all bulk is considerably less than the old-style bass, providing convenience and portability. Careful study of this manual will fully explain all components, their functions and adjustments to assure your complete satisfaction with your Fender Bass. STRING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT (See photo "A") The Fender bridge bars employed on both bass models are designed to provide the player with any desired string height. You will note that each bridge bar is held in place by the longitudinal screws which are used to vary their position (string length). 5 If a string plays flat at the 12th fret when compared with the harmonic at that fret, turn the longitudinal screw counterclockwise so as to move the bridge bar toward the neck. If the note at the 12th fret is sharp when compared with the harmonic, turn the longitudinal screw clockwise so as to move the bridge bar away from the neck. These adjustments will be fractional and should be necessary only in rare cases such as when string gauges are changed. Check the harmonic and the 12th fret note several times while making the string length adjustment to be sure the bridge is not moved past the proper position. ADJUSTABLE NECK TRUSS ROD (See photo "B") A well-known feature of all Fender Electric Guitars is the adjustable neck truss rod which maintains perfect neck alignment. If for any reason the neck of your Fender Bass appears to require further adjustment, you can make the correction without the necessity of returning the instrument to your dealer or the manufacturer. Lay the instrument on a table or other flat surface and insert a small standard-head screwdriver in the nut exposed at the end of the neck near the pickguard edge. If the neck bows up in the center, turn the slo...
