Front of computer (Sample Illustration) Removing the memory module slot cover 7 Remove the memory module slot cover. 8 Place the screw and the cover in a safe place so that you can retrieve them later. Static electricity can damage the memory module. Before you handle the module, touch a grounded metal surface to discharge any static electricity you may have built up. Avoid touching the connector on the memory module or on the computer. Grease or dust on the connector may cause memory access problems. 9 Carefully remove the new memory module from its antistatic packaging, without touching its connector. 10 Locate an empty memory module slot on the underside of the computer. NOTE If no memory slot is available, you must remove a module by performing steps 2-3 of “Removing a memory module” on page 58. 56 NOTE Getting Started Adding memory (optional) If your system has the memory modules stacked on top of one another, you must remove the top module first before removing/installing the bottom module. NOTE 11 For this model Slot A is the bottom slot. Slot B is the top slot. If only one memory module is to be installed, it must be installed in slot A. Pick up the memory module by its sides, avoiding any contact with its connector. Position the module toward the socket, aligning the connector’s notch with the matching key in the socket. latch latch key notch connector (Sample Illustration) Aligning the memory module with the socket 12 Firmly press the memory module into the memory slot’s socket at approximately a 30-degree angle (to the horizontal surface of the computer). (Sample Illustration) Inserting the memory module into the socket Getting Started Getting Started Adding memory (optional) 13 Once the module’s connector is fully inserted into the socket, press downward on the top edge of the module to seat the module into the latches at the sides of the socket. These latches should “snap” into place securely with the corresponding cutouts in the side of the module. If the latches and cutouts do not line up correctly, repeat steps 12-13. latch latch (Sample Illustration) Pressing down on the memory module Do not force the memory module into position. The memory module should be completely inserted into the socket and level when secured in place.
