Do not touch the components or contacts on a card. Hold a card by its edges or by its metal mounting bracket. Hold a component such as a processor by its edges, not by its pins. NOTICE: When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its strain-relief loop, not on the cable itself. Some cables have a connector with locking tabs; if you are disconnecting this type of cable, press in on the locking tabs before you disconnect the cable. As you pull connectors apart, keep them evenly aligned to avoid bending any connector pins. Also, before you connect a cable, ensure that both connectors are correctly oriented and aligned. 1. Ensure that the work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from being scratched. 2. Turn off your computer. 3. If the computer is connected to a docking device (docked), undock it. See the documentation that came with your docking device for instructions. 4. Disconnect any telephone or telecommunication lines from the computer. 5. Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets, and then press the power button to ground the system board. 6. Remove any installed PC Cards from the PC Card slot. 7. Close the display and turn the computer upside down on a flat work surface. 8. Slide and hold the battery-bay latch release on the bottom of the computer, and then remove the battery from the bay. 9. Remove any installed modules, including a second battery, if installed. 10. Remove the hard drive. If you do not have a BIOS update program floppy disk or CD, see "Flashing the BIOS From the Hard Drive." Flashing the BIOS From a Floppy Disk or a CD 1. Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in and that the main battery is installed properly. 2. Insert the BIOS update program floppy disk or CD, and turn on the computer. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen. The computer continues to boot and updates the new BIOS. When the flash update is complete, the computer will automatically reboot. 3. Press during POST to enter the system setup program. 4. Press and to reset the computer defaults. 5. Press , select Save changes and reboot, and press to save configuration changes. 6. Remove the flash BIOS update program floppy disk or CD from the drive and restart the computer. Flashing the BIOS From the Hard Drive 1. Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in, the main battery is properly installed, and a network cable is attached. 2. Boot up the computer. 3. Locate the latest BIOS update file for your computer at support.dell.com. 4. Click Download Now to download the file. 5. If the Export Compliance Disclaimer window appears, click Yes, I Accept this Agreement. The File Download window appears 6. Click Save this program to disk and then click OK. The Save In window appears. 7. Click the down arrow to view the Save In menu, select Desktop, and then click Save. The file downloads to your desktop. 8.
