Connecting a USB Device (page 119) Using Peripheral Devices > Connecting a Docking Station n100 N Connecting a Docking Station A docking station may be supplied with your computer. Connecting the supplied or optional docking station to your computer enables you to use optical disc media with the computer and connect additional peripherals to the computer, such as a printer and an external display. Some features and options in this section may not be available on your computer. See the specifications to find out about the configuration of your computer. USB ports that are compliant with the USB 3.0 standard are identifiable by their blue color. Do not unplug the AC adapter from the docking station or the AC outlet while using the docking station. This may cause data damage or hardware malfunctions. Using Peripheral Devices > Connecting a Docking Station n102 N Connecting the Docking Station to Your Computer To connect the docking station to your computer 1 Attach the docking station to the supplied vertical stand. ! Do not stand the docking station upside down. Be sure to attach it as illustrated above left. . If you do not use the supplied vertical stand when using the docking station, you can lay down the docking station as illustrated below. Plug one end of the power cord (1) into the AC adapter (2) and the other end into an AC outlet. Using Peripheral Devices > Connecting a Docking Station n103 N Plug the cable connected to the AC adapter (2) into the DC IN port (3) on the docking station (4). ! Do not use the AC adapter supplied with your computer. Be sure to use the AC adapter supplied with the docking station. Using Peripheral Devices > Connecting a Docking Station n104 N Plug the docking station connector to both the docking station/USB port and the DC IN port on your computer. Using Peripheral Devices > Connecting a Docking Station n105 N Disconnecting the Docking Station from Your Computer ! Make sure that no devices connected to the docking station are in use before disconnecting it from your computer. Do not disconnect the docking station from your computer while the IN USE indicator light is lit. Disconnecting the docking station while the IN USE indicator light is lit may result in loss of unsaved data, no response from the computer, or a failure of the computer. If the computer stops responding, see What should I do if my computer or software stops responding? (page 156). Be sure to press the UNDOCK button and wait until the IN USE indicator light turns off before disconnecting the docking station from your computer even when the computer is in Hibernate mode or Sleep mode. When the battery pack is running out of power, disconnecting the docking station from your computer may result in loss of unsaved data. Using Peripheral Devices > Connecting a Docking Station n106 N To disconnect the docking station from your computer 1 Close certain software applications, such as using the graphics accelerator or accessing the optical disc drive or the USB port on the docking station. 2 Press the UNDOCK button (1) and wait until the IN USE indicator light (2) turns off. Hold the docking station connector and unplug it from your computer. . If the IN USE indicator light is unlit, you do not have to press the UNDOCK button. Using Peripheral Devices > Connecting a Docking Station n107 N Alternatively, you can disconnect the docking station from the computer as follows: 1 Click Start, the arrow next to the Shut down button, and Undock. 2 Make sure that a message balloon appears and the IN USE indicator light turns off. Then unplug the docking station connector from the computer. . To disconnect the docking station completely from AC power, unplug the AC adapter.
