Event Subsystem
The Event Subsystem is an exclusive feature of the HP Integrity server and controls the
HP Insight Management Service.
The Event Subsystem uses several other services as sub-agents to record system activity.
The Event Synchronization service maintains a log synchronized with the System Event Log
(SEL). The Loop-back Event Restore (LER) service captures SNMP alarms generated by
supported third party software and writes the information back to the SEL. The Event
Subsystem also monitors events logged to the SEL and the FPL by the Predictive Failure
Monitor (PFM).
The IPMI System Events Log is the database of events in the Baseboard Management
Controller (BMC) hardware. The SEL adapter conveys these events to the operating system.
For more information, go to the Windows Remote Management Glossary at
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa384465.aspx
The Forward Progress Log (FPL) stores detailed information about the boot process as the
system discovers memory, CPU, and I/O resources. Memory and Extensible Firmware
Interface (EFI) POST test progress and information is also stored in the FPL.
For more information, see the HP Forward Progress Log Provider Overview at
http://docs.hp.com/en/5991-6535/ar01s01.html
The Event Service logs all events from the SEL to the Windows Event log and generates
corresponding SNMP alarms. The Event Agent also enables Web based SEL event
monitoring and performs certain actions on the SEL, (for example, clearing the SEL and
marking events repaired). When the SEL is almost full, the service backs up the SEL and
clears it.
The Event Agent provides specific advisory text for each event to the SMH SEL viewer.
Type of Errors
The Event Subsystem monitors events logged in the IPMI SEL and FPL by various firmware
(FW) entities and OS agents noted above. For SEL events with warning or critical severity,
another service logs them to the Windows System Log (identifying the source as
“HPEventLog”), and an event agent generates equivalent SNMP traps.
Methodology
The Event Sync Service (hpesysvc.exe) reads FPL and SEL every 30 seconds. When a new
entry is found, the service saves the entry in the appropriate output log file based on the
severity of the event and whether the event affects the current running partition.
Output
The Event agent generates five types of output: 1) soft log files; 2) entries in the Windows
System Log; 3) SNMP traps; 4) email notification for specified system management
personnel (performed by the Event Notifier); and 5) content for the System Management
Homepage.
Soft log files
FPL and SEL entries are stored in four "soft log" files, that are .dat files in the directory:
