It is strongly recommended that the grinder be firmly mounted to a bench or stand for safe operation. The base of the grinder has a 7mm hole in each corner. These holes accept screws or bolts up to 6mm diameter. Mounting screws are not supplied with the unit. Where the grinder is to be mounted on to a steel work bench, it is advisable to place a piece of timber between the bench and grinder then screw or bolt through the grinder and timber into the bench. This further assists to reduce vibration. Important. When directly mounting the grinder ensure: • The surface under the grinder is flat and clean. • The 4 mount screws are applied evenly and not over tightened. Note. The four rubber suction caps should remain in place if mounting screws are used. Using the On/ Off switch 1. To turn the grinder on, press the top of the rocker switch (6) marked “I” 2. To turn the grinder off, press the bottom of the rocker switch (6) marked “O”. Operation Important. Prior to using the grinder, check that the eye shields and tool rests are fitted and correctly adjusted and that you are wearing safety gear including eye, hearing and breathing protection. 1. Turn the wheel by hand to make sure it does not touch the guard and runs freely. 2. Stand to one side, turn the switch (6) on and allow the motor to reach full speed. 3. Support the work piece on the tool rest (7) and gradually feed the work piece onto the wheel. Use pliers to hold small work pieces. Note. Traverse the work piece across the full width of the wheel to prolong its flat surface. 4. If the grinding operation causes the motor speed to noticeably decrease, pull back the work piece, allow the motor to regain full speed and restart the grinding operation, but apply less force. Warnings. Only use the front face of the grinding wheel, not the sides. Note that the work piece can get very warm. It may be necessary to cool a work piece by dipping it in a coolant or in water. Do not apply coolant or water to the grinding wheel. 9 Changing a grinding wheel (high speed wheel) Important. Prior to changing a wheel, ensure the grinder is turned off and the power plug is removed from the socket. Make sure that the replacement wheel is rated at 3000RPM or higher. 1. Remove the retaining screw and take off the tool rest (7). 2. Remove the retaining screw and take off the eye shield bracket (9) and eye shield (1). 3. Take off the third retaining screw and remove the outer guard (3). 4. Remove the retaining nut (see note below for correct direction of rotation), outer flange and the wheel. Note. The wheel on the left- hand side of the grinder has a left-hand thread and is unscrewed in a clockwise direction. The wheel on the right-hand side of the grinder has a right-hand thread and is unscrewed in an anti-clockwise direction. 5. Fit the replacement wheel on the shaft ensuring that there is a blotter between the wheel and clamp washers on each side of the wheel, and ensure the wheel is a slide fit (not loose) on the spindle. 6. Replace the retaining nut. (See the Note above regarding the direction of rotation of the nut). 7. Hold the wheel whilst you tighten the nut. Do not over tighten. 8. Replace the guard and eye shield assembly. 9. Re-adjust the tool rest and eye shield. 10. Rotate the wheel by hand to check for free movement and proper adjustments. 11. Plug in the grinder, put on eye protection, stand to one side and run the grinder at full speed for several minutes. Changing the sharpening wheel (low speed wheel for Model NTS2000A) The NTS2000A is a combination Bench Grinder / Sharpener, fitted with a wet bath on the sharpening wheel. The sharpening wheel rotates at a much slower rate at 130RPM, and together with the water bath assists to keep the part being sharpened cool and thus not damaging the cutting edge. The water also assists in keeping the wheel clean. Water should be drained at the completion of the sharpening task via the small drain hole on the bottom of the water bath. Ensure the rubber plug is firmly replaced. When filling the bath with water ensure the water is clean and fill the bath sufficiently to allow the wheel to be approx 12mm into the water. As you add the water to the bath, the sides of the wheel will become wet, thus indicating the depth of the wheel in the water. Do not overfill the bath. 10 1. Drain all the water from the bath (10). 2. Remove the two securing screws at the top of the bath. 3. Loosen, but do not remove the lower retaining screw. 4. Push the top clips of the bath clear of housing and then lower the bath clear of the housing. 5. Using an 18mm spanner, remove the wheel retaining nut by turning the nut in an anti-clockwise direction. 6. Remove the washer and the outer flange, followed by the wheel. 7. Ensure the new wheel conforms to the replacement wheel specifications in this manual. 8. Ensure the clamping surfaces are clean and fitted with blotters. 9. Fit the wheel on to the spindle and directly against the inner flange. 10. Fit the...
