Executive summary
Data set sizes are growing exponentially, so it is important to use data movement protocols that
are the most efficient. Most data movement tools today rely on TCP over sockets, which limits
flows to around bi-directional 20Gbps on today's 10Gb Ethernet (10GbE). RDMA over Converged
Ethernet (RoCE) is a promising new technology for high-performance storage data movement with
minimal CPU impact over today industry standard server’s infrastructures.
File-based storage has grown tremendously over the last several years. Organizations are
deploying file-based protocols at an accelerating rate for both virtualized environments and
databases. The introduction of SMB 3.0 (which includes SMB DirectRoCE) has opened new
opportunities in the same space for Windows ecosystems. SMB Direct can deliver near SAN-level
performance and availability with integrated data protection and optimized data transfer between
storage and server.

Target audience: Solution Architects looking for a solution that handles the rapid growth of big
data processing in virtualized and Cloud environment, where applications workload generates high
volume of storage data traffic. This paper assumes the reader has a solid knowledge of HP Proliant
enterprise servers, converged network adapter technologies, with Microsoft Windows 2012
deployment best practices. This white paper describes evaluation performed by HP in December
2014.
Introduction
This white paper is a best practices guide, explaining how to properly configure an HP Proliant
Gen9 server with HP FlexFabric 650FLB adapter for RoCE implementation.
HP servers provides a better TCO, it’s the right platform for a converged infrastructure:
• OneView platform management tools that scale across datacenters.
• Server components and form factors that are optimized for enterprise use cases.
• Hardware platforms where component parts have been qualified together.
• A proven support infrastructure

RoCE (RDMA over Converged Ethernet)

RoCE is a network protocol that allows remote direct memory access (RDMA) over a lossless
Ethernet network (CE). RoCE is a link layer protocol which allows communication between any two
hosts in the same Ethernet broadcast domain.
RDMA is fundamentally an accelerated I/O delivery mechanism. It introduces the concept of “zero-
copy” data placement, which allows specially designed RDMA (Network Interface Cards: NICs) on
both ends of a connection link to transfer data directly from the user memory of the source server
to the user memory of the destination server bypassing the operating system (OS) kernel.
