1. The maximum Adapters per server column shows the maximum number of Adapters that can be installed in a certain system. When using HP Serviceguard, the maximum number of active Gigabit Ethernet Adapters is half the total maximum installable Adapters per system. The secondary Adapters are not used until there
is a failover. For example, if a server running Serviceguard can have 16 Gigabit Ethernet Adapters installed, only 8 can be active.
Note: SD2 is currently limited to 140 bootable LAN ports. To determine the maximum number of a card supported per partition, the following algorithm is used:
1. Subtract the total number of LOMs in the partition from 140 bootable LAN ports.
a. B8 has up to 16 LOMs (4 blades with 4 LOMs each).
b. B16 has up to 32 LOMs (8 blades with 4 LOMs each).
c. B32 has up to 64 LOMs (16 blades with 4 LOMs each)
2. Divide the remaining value by the number of ports per card.
For example, a B16 with a single partition has 32 LOM ports (8 blades with 4 LOMs each). After removing the 32 LOM ports total from the 140 LAN port limit, we have 108 LAN ports left. Since AT094A has dual LAN ports, up to 54 of these cards are supported within a partition in a B16.

In this matrix, the designation “bootable” is only referring to the Ethernet port on the combination networking and I/O Adapters. “Bootable” means the Ethernet port or ports of a card support LAN Boot, which is pre-OS network boot (using IODC or EFI firmware) for the purpose of OS instal ation (using HP-UX Ignite or Remote
Installation Service).
The I/O ports are likely bootable as well (though from a storage device), but the characteristics of the I/O ports are shown in the separate support matrixes for SCSI and Fibre Channel.
3. For HP-UX 11i v1, HP-UX 11i v2 (Sept 2004 or later), and HP-UX 11i v3, there is no bundle name if the network card is a built-in LAN card or was factory installed because the driver is in the operating environment (OE). If adding (installing) the card yourself, the latest application for the driver can be obtained from the
latest application release DVD.
4. Each AB287A 10 Gigabit Ethernet card needs 512 MB memory and one CPU. Dual-core systems support one AB287A per core. Servers using the SX1000 chipset (rp7420/rp8420, rx7620/rx8620) support two AB287A Adapters per IO chassis. Servers using the SX2000 chipset (rx7640/rx8640) support four AB287A
Adapters per IO chassis. An 8-socket system has a max of two cells and one IO bay (chassis). A 16-socket system has a max of four cells and four IO bays (chassis). A 32-socket system has a max of eight cells, four internal IO chassis, and capacity to connect to one IOX which adds another four IO chassis. A 64-socket
system has a max of 16 cells, eight internal IO chassis, and capacity to connect to two IOXs which add another eight IO chassis.
HP recommends putting the 10 Gigabit Ethernet AB287A card only into one of the highest-performing (or “dual-rope”) PCI-X 133 MHz slots. To identify which slots are the highest performing slots in a particular system, please refer to the hardware users’ guide for each system and other documentation available at:

The AB287A is not supported in PCI slots. If installed in shared slots, the other card must also be a PCI-X card in PCI-X mode. If the other card is a PCI-only card, then the 10GbE card will not get claimed (error
should be logged in dmesg).
The AB287A is not supported on platforms that have all PCI slots or platforms that have all single rope PCI-X slots.
As of August 1, 2006 the 10 Gigabit Ethernet AB287A is no longer supported on the rx4640, rp4410, or rp4440.
5. The 10 Gigabit Ethernet AB287A, and the AB290A and AB465A combination Adapters, are not supported on rp7410, rp8400, or on the initial release HP 9000 Superdomes—those that have PA8600, PA8700, or PA8700+ PA-RISC processors inside. The newer HP 9000 Superdomes have PA8800 or newer PA-RISC
processors inside. The HP Integrity Superdomes have Itanium or Itanium 2 processors inside.
6. Each AD385A card needs 512 MB memory and one CPU.
7. 8. The AB545A card does not support PCI 33 MHz operation. Therefore, do not place this card in the shared slot of a system where the card in the neighboring shared slot is a 33-megahertz-only card. Please see the AB545A PCI-X 4-port Gigabit Ethernet card installation guide for the list of 33-megahertz-only Adapters.
9. The following systems do not support the A7012A/A7011A 2-port GigE Adapters: PA-RISC servers: all A/D/E/K/L/N/R/T/V-class servers; all PCI-based PA-RISC workstations; Itanium-based servers: rx4610, rx9610; Itanium-based workstations: i2000, Itanium 2-based zx2000.
10. Itanium is a trademark of Intel Corporation in the U.S. and other countries. Itanium-based systems use HP-UX 11.22 (11i v 1.6) or later. They do not run HP-UX 11i v1 or earlier.
11. For best performance, do not put the A9782A, A9784A, A5838A, or A5506B in a slot shared with other Adapters.
12. The following Adapters were discontinued March 1, 2003: A4926A and A4929A, A5230A, A5506B, and A5838A.
13. The A5506A card is supported in all the same systems as the A5506B; however, hardware support for the A5506A ended on November 30, 2006.
