Special Installation Instructions for Users of rx8640 and Integrity Superdome
If you are installing the latest USB-02 patch on an rx8640 or Integrity Superdome, the USB
drivers may not be built into the kernel unless an A6869/Obsidian or AD307A was present when
the system was initially installed. When you later wish to take advantage of the USB capabilities
of these cards, you must ensure that the USB drivers get built into the kernel. To do that,
1) Install the latest USB-02 patch
2) Execute the command “kcmodule hcd”. If the result indicates that the current state is
static, then you do not need to do anything else. The drivers are already built in.
Otherwise proceed to step (3).
3) Execute the command “kcmodule hcd=static”. This will build the USB drivers into the
kernel.
4) Reboot the system (installing the card(s) if not already installed)
Warning Arising from Unintended Installation of the latest USB-02 patch
It is possible that the latest USB-02 patch and its co-requisites will be installed as a side effect of
some other installation (e.g., due to autoselection of patches from an OE in which it is included).
If that happens and you did not remove all earlier version of USB-00 first and did not install USB-
00 version D at the same time as the latest USB-02 patch, you will get a warning message. If you
wish to use the new functionality provided by the latest USB-02 patch, you must remove the old
version of USB-00 from your system and reconfigure as described in the section below: Manually
Configuring USB-02
. If you wish to maintain your current USB functionality, the warning can be
ignored as the new functionality will be disabled as long as the old version of USB-00 is on the
system.
New ioscan Presentation
The USB related output of ioscan as well as the hardware paths and their meanings are different
once these patches are installed and the new USB functionality is enabled by the removal of
older versions of USB-00. The new details are described in a companion white paper entitled
“Understanding HP-UX 11i v2 and v3 USB ioscan” under USB-00 in the HP-UX 11iv3 section of
the Operating Environments area of http://docs.hp.com.
Changes in HID (keyboard/mouse) Device Special Files
The device special file (DSF) names for USB human interface devices (HID) changed with
PHKL_37815 and subsequent patches. USB HID devices include keyboards and mice. The
details are described in a companion white paper entitled “Changes in USB HID
(keyboard/mouse) Device Special Files for HP-UX 11iv3 using PHKL_37815” under USB-00 in
the HP-UX 11iv3 section of the Operating Environments area of http://docs.hp.com.
General Usage Notes
1) Before you detach any USB device from the system or remove media from an optical
drive, make sure you umount any file systems using the device and that any IO to the
device has been halted.
2) When a new USB mass storage device is added at runtime, it will be recognized by the
system automatically and will show up in ioscan. Device special files will usually be
created automatically. Occasionally, this takes up to 30 seconds. If the device special
files are not created automatically, you must run insf.
