1 Capacity Upgrade
Introduction
The Upgrade Kit increases the storage capacity of your HP StoreOnce Backup system. Be sure to
order the correct kit for your system:

HP StoreOnce 4430 Upgrade Kit: Contains an enclosure with 12 x 2 TB disks and two cables,
and is for use with the HP StoreOnce 4430 Backup system. The second cable is a longer
cable that is suitable for connecting to an HP StoreOnce 4430 Backup system that already
has upgrade kits installed.

HP StoreOnce 4220/4420 Upgrade Kit: Contains an enclosure with 12 x 1 TB disks and two
cables, and is for use with both the HP StoreOnce 4220 and 4420 Backup systems. The
second cable is a longer cable that is suitable for connecting to an HPStoreOnce 4420 Backup
system that already has upgrade kits installed.

HP StoreOnce 4210 Upgrade Kit: Contains an enclosure with 12 x 1 TB disks and one cable,
and is for use with the HP StoreOnce 4210 Backup system.
NOTE:
For HP StoreOnce 4210 Backup systems, the configured available disk capacity of
the Upgrade Kit is approximately 50% of the available disk capacity. The system cannot be
upgraded to use the whole capacity of the fitted disks because the product is not fitted with
the required memory or processor to make use of the additional capacity.
NOTE:
A maximum of three Upgrade Kits may be installed with the HP 4420 and 4430 Backup
systems; only one Upgrade Kit may be installed with the HP 4220 and 4210 Backup systems.
Planning for the Capacity Upgrade
IMPORTANT:
The addition of storage is an online operation; this means that additional storage
may be added while backups/restores are in progress. However, the new capacity will not be
available until the expansion process completes and there may be a performance impact on
backup/restore operations during the process.
With the HP 4220/4210 Backup system, depending upon the amount of data on the original
system the expansion process can take from five minutes to more than 12 hours to complete . With
the HP 4430/4420 Backup system, it could be longer depending upon the shelf configuration
and the amount of data. Make sure that host users are aware of the expansion process and check
to see how any scheduled jobs, such as replication and tape backup, may be affected by decreased
performance.
Overview of the Upgrade Process
1.
Install the rails for the Upgrade Kit, which should be located directly below or above the HP
StoreOnce Backup system; see “Installing the Rails” (page 6).
2.
Install the Upgrade Kit; see “Installing the Upgrade Kit” (page 6).
3.
Connect the Upgrade Kit to the HP StoreOnce Backup system; see “Connecting the Capacity
Upgrade Kit” (page 7).

4.

5.
Make sure you have both the HP entitlement order number (supplied with the Upgrade Kit)
