Note: The minimum bend radius for SMF and MMF cables is
Unsheathed: 1.7 inch (4.3 cm)
q
Sheathed: 4.2 inch (10.7 cm)
q
For fiber-optic cable part numbers, see the NonStop S-Series Planning and Configuration Guide or the Part
Number List for S-Series Field Replaceable Units (FRUs). For a specification of the bend radius and performance
requirements of fiber-optic cables, see the NonStop S-Series Planning and Configuration Guide.
Fiber-optic cables without plenums should be routed through the enclosure or cabinet's overhead racks rather
than under the floor so that they do not become damaged.
For IOAM enclosures, use fiber-optic cables with duplex Lucent connectors (LC) to connect to MSEBs in
processor enclosures. Use LC connectors to connect to the ServerNet switch boards in an IOAM enclosure. See
Figure: Fiber-Optic Cable.
Fiber-optic cables from the FCSA and G4SA are routed through the CMS lower assembly, which contains 10
cable management restraints, or cartridges. Each cartridge has 4 slots, numbered 1 to 4. It is recommended that
fiber-optic cables be routed through the slot in the cartridge that corresponds to the port on the FRU.
The cable management cartridge acts as a strain relief for fiber-optic cables when the tab, or latch, is closed,
securing up to 4 cables. The section of the fiber-optic cable between the FCSA (or G4SA) and the cartridge should
be slightly loose, not tight.
Cables are routed out of the CMS lower assembly using the vertical radius guide (VRG), which directs the cables
up or down in the cabinet while maintaining the minimum bend radius and supplying strain relief.
The proper routing of fiber-optic cables around the center radius control of the cable management cartridge is as
follows:
Cables exiting the cartridge on the left side should route to the right side of the
q
center radius control.
Cables exiting the cartridge on the right side should route to the left side of the
q
center radius control.
Routing Cables Through the CMS of an IOAM Enclosure
To remove cables from the cable tray (row of blue tabs), open each cable restraint by pulling up on the blue tab.
Then lift the cables from the tray. See Figure: Cable Tray and Figure: Cable Tray With Tab Open.
To install cables in the cable tray, open each cable restraint and lay the cables in the appropriate slots over the
foam. Be sure not to pinch the cables when you close the blue tab. See Figure: Cable Tray With Tabs Closed.
Extra cable length enables a cable to bend to attach to a connector. If you are tying together a large group of
cables, you will need extra slack in each cable in that group. How much slack you need depends on the size of
that group of cables. Minimum bend radius for fiber-optic cables is listed under Fiber-Optic Cables in this topic.
The general rule to follow while routing cables is to route using the shortest path between origin and destination,
and don't cross cables in a manner such that they become entangled.
Disconnecting Cables From CRUs and FRUs
For ServerNet ECL cables, loosen both thumbscrews on the cable connector and remove the cable.
q
For fiber-optic cables, pull the cable by the connector and not by the cable itself (it is possible to loosen the
q
fibers within the connector housing).
For serial-copper cables, fully and firmly depress the tab (retainer) on the cable connector before pulling out
q
the cable. Otherwise, you could bend or break two tiny retainer pins inside the PIC receptacle.
Note: When a good fiber optic cable is disconnected, install dust covers on the connectors to protect the ends
of the cable. If the cable is defective, cut off the connectors so it cannot be reinstalled and discard the cable. The
dust covers are supplied on new cables.
