Extension and Escape Characters
Entity names supplied with the GET-CONFIG-NAME UOW
This rule applies to GUARDIAN 90 File Server keywords, too. Examples are file
names that pertain to a correspondent's TRANSFER and PS MAIL client profiles,
such as the names of the program files for the default formatter, editor, and IXF
programs. These file names, and the default volume and subvolume names, are
entered, stored, and returned in ASCII code.
The TRANSFER delivery system assumes that the VERSION-CODE field in the
IPC header and the SELF-IDENT field in the UOW header for all UOWs are in the
US ASCII character map.
Messages Processed
Each correspondent in a TRANSFER system is assigned a character map that applies to

messages processed outside of a standard TRANSFER session. This map is used for

the same purposes as the correspondent's depot language. The correspondent's
character map is specified by the system administrator in the DATA-DEPOT-LANG-
CMAP profile element.
Extension and Escape
Every correspondent must be able to refer to every other correspondent and

distribution list in that correspondent’s TRANSFER system as well as to every folder
and named item in the correspondent’s depot. Thus, if a character map does not
represent all characters needed for object names in a TRANSFER system, the system
administrator must specify extension or escape characters that correspondents can use
to represent these characters that would otherwise be missing.
Extension characters are substituted on a one-for-one basis for characters not present
in a particular map. In other words, they extend the scope of that map. These are
characters that correspondents do not normally use in names; they are not members of
the name character set for this TRANSFER system.
For example, the Austrian/German character map supplied by Tandem for 6530
terminals does not contain the o-slash character often found in Danish or Norwegian
names. Still, the uniform use of names demands that a German user typing at a 6530
terminal configured for Austrian/German mapping be able to type in a Danish name
that contains the o-slash. To resolve this problem, the system administrator at the
German site might configure the pound sign (#) to map to an o-slash, so German users
type a pound sign whenever they want to represent an o-slash in a Danish name.
Escape characters in most cases are used to represent diacritical marks that modify
Latin alphabetic characters. An example is the letter "e" with a grave accent. Escape
characters are also used to represent the overcircle in an overcircled A, and the slash in
an o-slash (which are not, strictly speaking, diacritical marks, but are treated in the
same way as diacritical marks by the TRANSFER delivery system). To represent such
a character in a map that does not contain it, a correspondent must enter the escape
character followed by the character it modifies.
For example, suppose a German correspondent wants to send a message to a Danish
correspondent whose name contains the o-slash character. Although this character
does not appear on the German correspondent's keyboard, the o-slash can be
represented by entering /o.
