Glossary
FINGER
FINGER. A protocol providing a method for retrieving status information about one or all the
users on a particular system.
fixed structure. In DSM programmatic interfaces, a multifield structure declared for the
value of a simple token. Fields cannot be added to fixed structures in later RVUs.
forwarding distributor. An EMS distributor process that sends selected event messages
to an EMS collector on another network node. See also distributor.
FTP (File Transfer Protocol). The Internet standard, high-level protocol for transferring
files from one machine to another. Usually implemented as application level programs,
FTP uses the TELNET and TCP protocols. The server side requires a client to supply a
user ID and password before it will honor requests.
gateway. A special-purpose, dedicated computer that attaches to two or more networks
and routes packets from one to the other. In particular, an Internet gateway routes IP
datagrams among the networks to which it connects. Gateways route packets to other
gateways until they can be delivered to the final destination directly across one
physical network. The term is loosely applied to any machine that transfers information
from one network to another, as in mail gateway.
hierarchical routing. Routing based on a hierarchical addressing scheme. Most Internet
routing is based on a two-level hierarchy in which an Internet address is divided into a
network portion and a host portion. Gateways use only the network portion until the
datagram reaches a gateway that can deliver it directly. Subnetting introduces
additional levels of hierarchical routing.
hop count. A measure of distance between two points in the Internet. A hop count of n.
means that n gateways separate the source from the destination.
human interface. An informal term referring to any interactive interface (as contrasted with
a programmatic interface).
ICMP. (Internet Control Message Protocol) An integral part of the Internet Protocol (IP)
that handles error and control messages. Specifically, gateways and hosts use ICMP to
send reports of problems about datagrams back to the original source that sent the
datagram. ICMP also includes an echo request/reply used to test whether a destination
is reachable and responding.
IEEE. (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). An international industry group
that develops standards for many areas of electrical engineering and computers.
IGP. (Interior Gateway Protocol).The generic term applied to any protocol used to
propagate network reachability and routing information within an autonomous system.
Although no standard Internet IGP exists, RIP is among the most popular.
Information Xchange Facility (IXF). HP software product that provides file transfer support
between a HP system and IBM-compatible PCs.
