Glossary
object
object. In general Compaq usage, one or more of the devices, lines, processes, and files in a
Compaq subsystem; any entity subject to independent reference or control by one or
more subsystems. In Distributed Systems Management (DSM) usage, an entity subject
to independent reference and control by a subsystem: for example, the IPXMGR process
$ZMGR or the IPXPROTO process $ZN0.
object-name template. In Distributed Systems Management (DSM), a name that stands for
more than one object. An object-name template includes one or more wildcard
characters, which stand for any possible character(s) in a search string or in a name
applying to multiple objects. In DSM, a question mark (?) indicates a single character,
and an asterisk (*) indicates zero, one, or more consecutive characters.
object type. In Distributed Systems Management (DSM), the category of objects to which a
specific object belongs: for example, the IPXMGR process has the object type
SUBSYS, and the IPXPROTO process has the object type PROCESS. A subsystem
identifies a set of object types by the objects it manages. The Subsystem Control Facility
(SCF) interf
aces to Compaq data communications subsystems use standard keywords to
identify the types.
ODBC. See NonStop Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) Server and Open Database
Connectivity (ODBC).
ODBC Server. See NonStop Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) Server and Open
Database Connectivity (ODBC).
Open Database Connectivity (ODBC). A Microsoft application program interface (API) for
connecting to a database. The ODBC interface allows programmers to write a single set
of code to access different Structured Query Language (SQL) databases. The NonStop
Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) Server
is a Compaq software product that
processes ODBC requests. It replaces the Compaq SQL Server Gateway product.
Outside View. A software product that includes several types of terminal emulators that run
on a PC with the Microsoft Windows operating system. Outside View provides a 65xx
connection and Information Xchange Facility (IXF) file transfer to a Compaq system.
packet. The unit of data sent across a packet-switching network. While some Internet
literature uses it to refer specifically to data sent across a physical network, other
literature views the Internet as a packet-switching network and describes IP datagrams
as packets.
packet-switching. A technique in which messages are broken into smaller units, each called
a packet, that can be individually addressed and routed through the network. The
receiving-end node ascertains that all the packets are received and in the proper
sequence before forwarding the complete message to the addressee.
Pathway Open Environment Toolkit (POET). A set of programs and utilities that assists in
the creation and running of client/transaction server applications for Compaq systems.
POET can be used to build clients that run on a PC platform.
