Glossary
system-defined primary key
system-defined primary key. The primary key that identifies each row in an entry-
sequenced or relative table or in a key-sequenced table for which there is no other user-
defined key. The column name of the system-defined primary key for a table is
SYSKEY. Other column names can represent SYSKEY for views. Contrast with user-
defined primary key.
See also clustering key, primary key, and SYSKEY column.
table. A logical representation of data in a database in which a set of records is represented as
a sequence of rows, and the set of fields common to all the records is represented as a
series of columns. The intersection of a row and column represents the data value of a
particular field in a particular record. As a NonStop SQL/MP object, a table defines data
in columns and defines the physical characteristics of the table for the file system.
Contrast with file.
table code. See file code.
table lock. A lock held by a process on all the rows in all partitions of a partitioned table.
Contrast with generic lock, partition lock, and row lock.
Tandem NonStop Series (TNS). Computers that support the Compaq Tandem NonStop
Kernel operating system and that are based on complex instruction set computing
(CISC) technology.
Tandem NonStop Series/RISC (TNS/R). Computers that support the Tandem NonStop
Kernel operating system and that are based on reduced instruction set computing (RISC)
technology. TNS/R processors implement the TNS/R instruction set and are upwardly
compatible with the TNS system-level architecture.
timeout. A method used by NonStop SQL/MP to alleviate deadlocks. If a process cannot
acquire a lock within a given period, the NonStop SQL/MP system rejects the lock
request and returns a timeout error.
timestamp check. A comparison performed by NonStop SQL/MP of an SQL object’s current
redefinition timestamp with its compile-time redefinition timestamp to determine if the
object has been modified since the last explicit SQL compilation. If the redefinition
timestamp has changed, the execution plan (and program) is invalid and might need to
be automatically recompiled.
TMF (Transaction Management Facility). A database protection subsystem incorporated
into the Tandem NonStop Kernel and the main functional component of the NonStop
Transaction Manager/MP. The TMF subsystem helps maintain the consistency and
integrity of a database updated by concurrent transactions and protects the database
against damage due to node or media failures. See also file recovery, TMF transaction,
and volume recovery.
TMF subsystem. See Transaction Management Facility.
TMF transaction. An operation or series of operations that transforms a database from one
consistent state to another. The TMF subsystem treats transactions as a single unit;
either all of the changes made by a transaction are made permanent (the transaction is
committed) or none of the changes are made permanent (the transaction is aborted). If an
