Flow Map Host
Selecting Objects
Transients
An entity is considered transient if it exists for less than the defined percentage of the
measurement window. Generally, a transient is an entity that did not exist during the
entire TPDC sample. Transients are rare on most well-tuned production systems, but
could be numerous on development or test environments. If the entity is transient but
transients are not permitted, the entity is rejected and is not subjected to any further
processing. This test is only processed if the following command is present:
SET ALLOW-TRANSIENTS NO
The definition of a transient depends on the statement:
SET TRANSIENT-PERCENT user-selected percent
All transients are excluded unconditionally if SET ALLOW-TRANSIENTS NO is
specified. This exclusion applies to all TPDC entities, PROCESS, FILE, DISKFILE, and
DISCOPEN.
You can define a transient using the SET TRANSIENT-PERCENT statement if
transients are allowed. The default is 90%. This means that entities that lasted for 90%
or more of the total TPDC sample time will be included in the diagram.
Selection by GROUP
GROUP statements are not an essential part of the configuration file, but are often
Commands
desirable. They simplify Flow Map diagrams by representing many objects that share
a common function as a single entity. You can use a GROUP command and its clauses
to override INCLUDE, EXCLUDE, SET APPLY-THRESHOLDS and SET DISCARD
commands.
Once you define GROUPs, each entity is tested against each group definition until a
match is found or there are no more groups. If a match is found, the entity’s counters
are added to the GROUP counters. If no match is found, the entity proceeds to the
next phase for INCLUDE testing. The entity is discarded at this stage if the DISCARD
clause is set to YES or omitted and you have defined SET DISCARD YES. The entity is
subjected to a THRESHOLD test if it is not discarded, but it may be discarded if it fails
the threshold test.
When all entities have been tested, each GROUP is checked against any GROUP
THRESHOLDS that have been defined. This test is performed only if the group
contained a THRESHOLDS YES clause. If no clause is present, this test is performed
only if the command SET APPLY- THRESHOLDS YES is present. The GROUP
PROCESS command syntax later in this section shows some examples.
Carefully designed Flow Map groups give a clear and uncluttered diagram. Such
diagrams can have a significant visual impact and make it easier to understand the
complex interactions of applications. The underlying lower level components are still
available and each bubble box can be exploded to show the composite objects.
Selection by INCLUDE
INCLUDE has three main functions:
1.
Overriding the effects of SET DISCARD, or SET APPLY-THRESHOLDS for
specific entities.
