Glossary
mirrored disk or volume
mirrored disk or volume. A pair of identical disk drives that are used together as a single
logical volume. One drive is considered primary and the other is called the mirror. Each
byte of data written to the primary drive is also written to the mirror drive; if the primary
drive fails, the mirror drive can continue operations. Each drive has the same volume
name, but the name has a suffix to show which drive is the primary (-P) and which is the
mirror (-M). See also volume.
modular storage system. A framework for stacking multiple Tandem storage devices. The
modular storage system consists of low-cost, common-form-factor modules that can be
vertically stacked in an external support structure. Devices can include cartridge tape
drives or disk drives.
module. In the 45xx modular disk subsystem, a single storage compartment or position in a
modular storage system that stores disk drives or tape drives. The 45xx disk module
contains up to eight disk drives.
offline. The disk drive mode in which a device cannot execute read or write commands issued
from the Tandem system.
online. The disk drive mode in which a device can execute read and write commands issued
from the Tandem system.
processor. (1) The central processing unit (CPU). A Tandem system has multiple cooperating
processors rather than a single CPU. Each processor reads program instructions, moves
data between processor memory and the ServerNet addressable controllers (SACs), and
performs arithmetic operations. (2) One or more computer chips, typically mounted on a
logic board, that are designed to perform data processing or to manage a particular
aspect of computer operations.
quadrant. Two physically contiguous disk drive slots served by the same small computer
system interface (SCSI) bus. In a 45xx disk module, there are four quadrants, numbered
1 to 4, from left to right (as viewed from the front of the module).
RESTORE utility. A Tandem software utility that copies backup files from a backup tape to
disk. See also BACKUP utility.
SAC. See ServerNet addressable controller.
ServerNet addressable controller. A controller that is uniquely addressable within one or
more ServerNet address domains (SADs) through the node ID and address fields in a
request packet. A SAC is typically implemented on some portion of a processor
multifunction (PMF) customer-replaceable unit (CRU), an I/O multifunction (IOMF)
CRU, or a ServerNet adapter.
SCF. See Subsystem Control Facility (SCF).
SCSI. See small computer system interface (SCSI).
SCSI ID. See unit number.
