Understanding TGAL
How Is TGAL Run?
How Is TGAL Run?
When you type the TGAL command, the Command Interpreter starts a process that
runs the TGAL program. The TGAL program reads your EDIT file and produces
formatted output.
How Do You Print a File?
You can print your files in two ways:
By sending the formatted copy directly to the printer
By sending the formatted copy to the spooler
Usually when you print your document, you direct the formatted copy to a spooler
process. The spooler collects formatted copy from TGAL and waits for the appropriate
printer to be ready. When the printer is available, the spooler sends the document to
the printer. The spooler process is identified by $S in this manual. For more
information, see the GUARDIAN Operating System User’s Guide for your system.
After you create an EDIT file, you run TGAL with the name of that file and the name
of a subdevice (printer). When you are ready to send your file to the printer, you
enter:
TGAL/IN file-name, OUT $spooler-name.#subdevice-name/
For example, if you have a file named EDITFILE that you are directing to a spooler
subsystem named $S and then to a printer named PRINTER, you enter:
TGAL/IN EDITFILE, OUT $S.#PRINTER/
If you do not have a preference for a specific printer on which to print your file, then
you can send your file directly to the spooler, and your file prints on the first available
default printer. You enter:
TGAL/IN EDITFILE, OUT $S/
To print your file on a printer on another system, you include the other system’s name
in the TGAL RUN command. For example, if you want to send your file to the
\TEXAS system and print it on the SEH printer, you enter:
TGAL/IN EDITFILE, OUT \TEXAS.$S.#SEH/
When you send a document directly to a printer, the printer must be available. If
anyone else is using the printer at that time, you get an error 12, file in use, as in the
following example. The Command Interpreter prompt used in this example is a colon.
:TGAL /IN EDITFILE, OUT $PRINTER/
??: 012
ABENDED 05,039
:error 12
012 file in use
If the printer is free, you do not get another prompt from the Command Interpreter
until the entire document is printed. If you press the BREAK key, TGAL continues
processing your file, and the Command Interpreter displays a prompt.
