Configuring NonStop DCE
DCE Initial Cell Configuration
To interoperate within the NonStop DCE environment, a virtual host must first identify
itself to the security server and cell directory service (CDS) server. This action allows a
machine access to an existing cell. A machine that meets these minimum requirements
is referred to as a DCE “client machine.” However, if no cell has been established,
dce_config is used to set up an initial cell. Setting up an initial cell automatically
satisfies the requirements for a DCE client machine.
dce_config is also used to configure additional security, CDS, distributed time
service (DTS), and audit servers. Additional security servers provide database
replication for higher availability. Additional CDS servers provide namespace
replication and partitioning. DTS servers ensure that all the machines in the cell have
roughly synchronized time, which is necessary for authenticated remote procedure
calls (RPCs) to function correctly.
NonStop DCE has extended dce_config use of the standard DCE configuration file,
/opt/dcelocal.hostname/dce_cf.db. Entries have been added to evenly
distribute the DCE demons among processors. Guardian process names have been
added for easy process identification in both the OSS and Guardian environments.
Default Guardian process priorities have been assigned.
Note. The cdsclerk processes have an internal mechanism for Guardian process naming
and do not use a configuration variable. However, the cdsclerk processes do use the
Guardian priority and processor values.
These entries are automatically added to the configuration file by dce_config. The
default values can be modified; the new values will be used the next time dce_config
option 3 on the main menu (START) is invoked.
\dce_config option 6 on the main menu (REMOVE) removes the DCE configuration
file, and any modifications made to that file are lost.
The environment variable, TOTAL_CLERKS, is used by dce_config to configure the
number of cdsclerk processes. If this variable is unspecified, the default is 1.
The amount of CDS activity determines how many cdsclerk processes are
necessary; usually, one or two clerks are sufficient. The number of cdsclerk
processes is also stored in the DCE configuration file, dce_cf.db, and can be
modified as described in Managing the cdsadv and cdsclerk Processes on page 6-2.
Changes are used the next time dce_config main menu option 3 (START) is
invoked.
