Kernel-Managed Swap Space Process Flow
When a processor is loaded, either because it is being loaded manually or because it
is listed in the CIIN file when the system is started, KMSF manages the swap space for
the processor:
1. KMSF checks the ZSYSCFG file to see if there are any configured swap files for
the processor.
2. If there is a configured swap file:
• If the disk drive containing the configured swap file is up, the configured swap
file is used.
• If the disk drive containing the configured swap file is down, KMSF attempts to
use the default swap file for the processor. If there is no default swap file
already created for the processor, KMSF attempts to create and use the
default swap file.
3. If there are no configured swap files for the processor, KMSF attempts to use the
default swap file for the processor. If there is no default swap file already created
for the processor, KMSF attempts to create and use the default swap file.
4. If there is no ZSYSCFG file, there are no configured or default swap files
configured. KMSF attempts to create a default swap file and the ZSYSCFG file.
Note. When you load the system, if there is insufficient space on $SYSTEM for all of the
default swap files, a processor halt can occur, and you will not be able to load all of the
processors in the system. The halt code varies, depending on the program that is running
when swap space is exhausted. Processor halt %003055 and process creation errors
(error 55) are indicators of insufficient swap space. Run NSKCOM to add configured swap
files on a different disk, then reload the processors that could not be loaded when the
system was started.
After the swap files have started, KMSF receives requests for swap space from the
operating system and returns swap-space reservations to the operating system. A
reservation is the agreement to provide up to a stated amount of space as needed; the
space is not allocated all at once, but is allocated as it is needed. When a process is
created, the memory management software requests a single initial swap space
reservation for the process from the KMSF.
If there is a shortage of available physical memory, the memory management software
finds a page suitable for swapping, such as a page belonging to an inactive process. If
the chosen page contains dynamic data (rather than code or read-only data), then its
contents must be saved on disk. The memory management software requests swap
space from KMSF, which finds and allocates swap space against the reservation.
The operating system swaps to the KMS files as needed. As a process’s need for
swap space grows, KMSF increases the reservation in response to a
RESIZESEGMENT procedure call from the process. Additional swap space might be
